How Children Fail

How Children Learn

John Holt

’Way back when I was in college, I found one of John Holt’s books in the University of Rochester bookstore, flipped through it, and thought, “This guy is crazy.” Now I wish I’d had the sense to get beyond my prejudices and learn from him. These observations from his experiences as a teacher and as a friend of homeschoolers I would rank as of primary importance to all parents, no matter what educational options they may choose for their children. The titles could easily be “How People Fail” and “How People Learn,” for I find that his conclusions apply as much to adults as to children. Look for the revised editions; the books were originally written nearly 40 years ago and revised 20 years later. The additional commentary is invaluable.
